Mercedes-Benz proves their tagline “The best or nothing” to be true, with the launch of their new IAA Coupe Concept at the 66th Frankfurt Motor Show. IAA stands for ‘Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile’, a masterpiece in the automobile history that you will come to know shortly. Giving a glimpse of the future cars, the manufacturer has designed the concept to be technically and digitally advanced and uses active aerodynamic elements to make it one of the fastest models on road.

Mercedes-Benz has designed the IAA Concept keeping a futuristic philosophy in mind as the car transforms itself at the tap of a button with the rear end having eight segments extend themselves giving an increment of about 390 mm in length when the car crosses the 80 kmph mark when car goes from design mode to aerodynamic mode. The front bumper comes equipped with flaps that move 25 mm towards the front and 20 mm towards the rear side for better airflow. Also, the louvre in the front bumper shifts itself up to 60 mm to the rear for better air to flow beneath the car. The wheel rims or the ‘Active Rims’ use centrifugal force to change their size from 55 mm to 0 mm that convert the 5-spoke wheels into a flat disc.

Mercedes has made the IAA Concept with great simplicity in design but retains the emphasis of optimum aerodynamics. With huge efforts by their design team, they have been able to set an aerodynamics world record with a Cd (Drag Coefficient) of 0.19. In terms of design, work on the outside is fantastically complemented by the tastefully done interiors, which is built up of top notch materials as seen on the S-Class and S-Class Coupe.

The Mercedes IAA concept has a two-spoke steering wheel for weight reduction and comes equipped with a touch system and OFN (Optical Finger Navigation) unit, wherein the OFN button on the left controls the left display and the button on the right controls the right display in the car’s dashboard. The concept is 5040 mm in length (5430 mm in aerodynamic mode), 1995 mm in width and 1305 mm in height with a wheelbase measuring 2975 mm. Power functions via a petrol and electric plug-in hybrid motor pumping a total of 279 HP with an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. The concept can do 66 km solely on electric power in aero mode, which gets reduced to 63 km in design mode.
