Mercedes has launched their AMG powered roadster replacement for the SLK55 and we are very intrigued.
The new Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 is the replacement to the rather aging SLK 55. The SLC is lighter, faster and more efficient. The German manufacturer has been aggressively targeting the Indian market this year and the new SLC 43 is their latest weapon. Mercedes have launched the new roadster a mere six months after its international premiere and we couldn’t be happier.
The new SLC 43 is based on the modern C-class platform and features an unconventional convertible hard-top roof. The new car does take styling cues from its ancestor – the SLK, but its true inspiration comes from the new Mercedes design language.
This new roadster is a handsome car with its proud diamond patterned radiator grill and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. The signature Mercedes swept-back headlamps and the LED DRLs add to the sophisticated look the SLC has going for itself. The long straight bonnet, the aggressively raked windshield and the reworked front skirt all point towards the SLC’s sporting intentions.
Power is supplied by an all-new 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 motor, that replaces the SLK 55’s V8. The SLC may be down on displacement but it delivers a healthy 364 HP and 520 Nm of torque. It helps this new lighter and tauter roadster hit the ton in 4.7 seconds. More importantly, these figures put the new SLC 43 ahead of its main rival the BMW Z4 in a game of top trumps. This new Mercedes is definitely making a case for itself.
Driving the power to the rear wheels is Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic gearbox. The 9-speed auto box definitely works in favour of efficiency, but how it affects the SLC’s sporting driveability is questionable. The new auto transmission offers a number of driving modes to make the SLC 43 as versatile and user-friendly as possible.
Traditionally, the SLK marquee has never been an all-out thoroughbred, but instead embraced both luxury and performance in an exciting open top avatar. The SLC seeks to follow in those footsteps and that’s a very good thing. Properly civilized, the new SLC 43 offers a luxurious interior package loaded with electronic goodies. The circular air vents, the three spoke wheel and the long centre console is distinctively Mercedes in design.
The Mercedes SLC 43 AMG is priced at a rather attractive Rs.77.50 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Its main rival in India is the BMW Z4, but the aging beamer is going to have to step up its game to keep up with the new SLC. Launching the new SLC 43 this quickly is a smart move by Mercedes and we hope they maintain their dedication and commitment to the Indian market.
