The new Mercedes-AMG GT Concept is a sexy glimpse of the future

    By Augustine Morris | News | 0 comment | 9 March, 2017 | 0

The fabulous, but rather confusingly named Mercedes-AMG GT Concept has the Porsche Panamera in its cross hairs at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz over the last year have reasserted their dominance in the luxury car market across the globe. They are champions in the world of Motorsport and a leader in all things automotive. But what’s been lacking in recent years is a truly pretty Mercedes that genuinely captures your gaze. But being Mercedes they’ve retrospected and found a solution to this rather delicate matter. Say hello to the enigmatic GT Concept. It is gorgeous, steeply raked and we hear it gets Formula One derived tech. The GT Concept is therefore a four-door weapon perfectly designed to attack the Panamera camp.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Concept looks well proportioned and follows a rather fresh design language and we truly appreciate that. The ‘Panamericana’ grille takes inspiration from the original 300SL that championed the 1952 Carrera Panamericana Mexican Road Race. The grille is savage and hints at a lot of turbo-intake. The shark inspired grille is aggressive and purposeful. The triangular single exhaust and the ultra slim single-unit tail lamps look effortlessly modern in this world of ‘tacky’ modern concepts. The front bumper is garnished with an elegant yet purposeful carbon-fibre lip that integrates well with the gaping corner intakes. The low sloping roof-line is mesmerising and perfectly mates with the tightly-packed and well thought tail section. The roof encompassing panoramic sunroof adds to this car’s outrageous sex-appeal.

The GT Concept features a super long bonnet that meets as super steeply-raked windshield. It looks phenomenal and is reminiscent of the fabled SLR McLaren coupe. The fresh headlamp design looks fresh yet distinctively Mercedes complementing that gorgeous silhouette. A perfect balance in all design elements essentially. There’s also the huge host of concept only attractions to keep things interesting. The underpinnings of the car are based on the very successful AMG E63. Overall though its a stunning car to behold and brings a much needed change in the design studio.

Details on the production power-train for the GT Concept are still minimal. We expect it to be powered by the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 and probably mated with a Formula One derived AMG hybrid drive unit. The concept although boasts an outrageous 805HP. The perfect gift therefore for AMG’s 50th birthday. A truly inspired concept that hopefully brings a resurgence in the design philosophies of future production Mercs. How inspired were you by the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept. Let us know in the comments below.
