“Why am I not able to find the ‘perfect’ car?” Ask any automaker, and they’ll go on about various problems that any car can have, and why one car can’t satisfy all needs to be “perfect”. Some might be insanely fast, but will let you down when it comes to the interiors. Some might have both of those qualities, but just don’t feel like the best car on the road, thanks to its improper handling.
But then, ask Audi. They’ll proudly point you towards the 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus, saying, “Find one fault in this baby spaceship. We dare ya!”
With the 2016 Audi R8 V10 plus being launched at the Delhi Auto Expo at a starting price of Rs. 2.47 crores, let’s take a closer look at the car and see for ourselves, what perfection is really all about!
First and foremost, let’s get the obvious out of the way. Audi has created some monstrous magic under the hood, no surprises there. A naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine powers this beast and produces a healthy 540 HP. Still not satisfied? Then take a look at the more powerful variant – The V10 Plus, that pumps out a mammoth 610 HP. Seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission has been offered, along with the Quattro all-wheel drive system in both the variants.
Even though only a Coupe variant is being offered for now, expect things to change in the near future, with the Spyder version of this German beast being manufactured soon. With the V10 plus, a sprint of 0-100 kmph can be achieved in just 3.2 seconds; and it’s top speed is around 330 kmph (205 mph). And not to forget, the roar of that naturally aspirated V10 is pure mayhem!
From the outside, this car is extremely sharp, modern and aggressive. A new aluminium and carbon fibre structure contributes to lighter weight and 40% better rigidity. A carbon fibre rear wing is present in the V10 plus, which gives it a much more dramatic feel, while improving the car’s aerodynamics for the occasional track-days. The headlight mechanisms have been re-engineered to incorporate Audi’s optional laser light technology. Coming to the side profile, there is one major design change, that cannot go unnoticed. The single side-blade that was featured on the previous-gen R8, has now been cut into two separate carbon fibre panels; which enhances the muscular lines of the car, and in our opinion, looks really hot!
The new R8 packs a completely redesigned and outstanding digital dashboard, which features a new 12.3-inch TFT display. A set of all-new plush seats and a new Drive Select system are some of the factors which has made the 2016 R8 so special. Dynamic Drive on both V10 and V10 plus, allows you to switch between Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual modes. But in the “V10 Plus” variant, the driver can also select between Wet, Dry and Snow settings to customize the mapping of the engine, transmission and stability control, depending on how confident they are feeling, or what the conditions are like underfoot.
Lighter, stiffer, powerful and extremely pleasant to drive, the 2016 R8 is nearly impossible to faulter. Audi has been successful in incredibly improving an already excellent car, by a huge margin. The German manufacturer just keeps getting better, doesn’t it? The only question left to be answered is: Competition, can you keep up?
