Volvo is readying up a replacement for their executive sedan the S80 with a much better version to be known as the S90. The company has taken this decision because the S80 is too old for its competitors that are way more advanced in the segment and so Volvo will bring the S90 in the market to fight its battle. The Swedish carmaker plans to hit the mid-size luxury sedan segment with the S90 that will compete against the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-class.
Volvo does have some big plans because there are chances that it may even roll out an estate model and a crossover as well based on the new S90. The company also plans to replace the old XC70 with the new crossover named as V90 Cross Country. Talking about the S90, the car will be much roomier than the S80 and will offering premium quality materials and features that will have a Swedish flavour inside out.
Volvo will use its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform for the S90 as well, that is currently seen on the XC90 which adds up to a great driver’s experience. Likewise, the other 90 series models are expected to come equipped with the same engine options like the SUV. The expected ones are a 2.0-litre D4 and D5 diesel, a 316 HP 2.0-litre turbo petrol T6 and a 407hp 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged plugin hybrid 4-cylinder T8 Twin-Engine.
The new S90 model will be a bit roomier than the S80 which measured 4.85 metres in length, 1.86 metres in width and 1.49 metres in height with a wheelbase of 2.83 metres. So, these numbers clearly state that the new car will be a great offering to people who have big cabin space in mind and a some great piece of interiors that will distinguish this Volvo from the others.
In the spy shots, the car is seen heavily camouflaged and since it’s in the testing stage, the basic outline of is pretty well understood. If Volvo uses their last year’s Estate Concept ideas, the car will surely be one niche contender in the market. It is believed that Volvo won’t delay the S90 given the new support and ownership and could even release some information as early as within this year through teasers.
