The new Ducati 1299 Superleggera is an exotic and stunningly beautiful machine designed to be the fastest and most exclusive road legal motorcycle.
Ducati has unveiled their latest 1299 Superleggera at the 2017 Milan Motorcycle Show. Based on the standard 1299, the new Superleggera is a limited edition, lightened machine and derives its moniker from the Lamborghini stables. What makes the 1299 Superleggera ever so special, is the combination of its feather weight setup, diabolic power plant and its gorgeous bodywork.
The standard 1299 is a lightweight supersport and an achievement in its own right. The Superleggera however takes things to a whole new dimension. Ducati claims a staggering dry weight of 150kg for the race kit Superleggera. It is a paradise of carbon fibre and precious metals. The signature Ducati monocoque frame is now built out of high-strength carbon fibre laced with aluminium alloy inserts. The carbon-fibre wheels add a lusty look to the bike while helping further shed weight. The Superleggera’s swing arm and subframe also feature carbon fibre construction.
Every aspect on the new Ducati 1299 Superleggera is focused on lightness and performance. The oversquare 1285cc Superquadro L-twin now produces a mind-numbing 215 HP and 147 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful twin-cylinder engine on the planet while still being Euro 4 complaint. The improved power figures aren’t the only trump cards the new motor boasts. Thanks to its enlarged titanium valves, a reworked and lighter tungsten-balanced crankshaft, titanium con rods and a lighter flywheel, the new motor is around 3kg lighter than the original.
The 1299 Superleggera features an updated clutch with a slip/assist function and makes use of a forged aluminium clutch basket. The new crankcase is sand-cast and the cam drive hosts a silent-type chain. A lightweight custom full system Titanium Akrapovic race exhaust completes this savage drivetrain package.
The weight reductions continue even on the suspension setup. The Ohlins adaptable FL936 43mm forks is a kilogram lighter than the Panigale R unit and the Ohlins TTX36 rear shock that now features a titanium spring further helps in the crash diet.
The Superleggera features a Moto-GP inspired electronics package. It incorporates EVO versions of Ducati’s traction control and anti-wheel systems. A new six-axis inertial measurement unit works along with Ducati’s new DSC (Ducati Slide Control) and DPL (Ducati Power Launch).
The DSC helps in more controlled slide angles with three levels of intervention. The DPL works along with the wheelie and traction control systems to help in perfectly setting off, even with extremely large amounts of torque hitting the rear wheel. The Bosch cornering ABS has now been recalibrated for the lighter Superleggera. Overall a ridiculous amount of electronics to keep this mental motorcycle on the road.
The new 1299 Superleggera has surpassed all the known boundaries of a road-legal track weapon. It is the ultimate expression of speed and beauty on two wheels. Sadly, Ducati will only be building 500 models and all have been accounted for. Its exclusivity, nuclear ballistic performance and drop dead gorgeous looks make it the ultimate bedroom poster motorcycle for the 21st century. What are your thoughts on the outrageous 1299 Superleggera?
