The M badge is what AMG is to Mercedes, RS to Audi and the Ludicrous mode to a Tesla, and we guarantee any petrolhead not only loves but even fears the ‘M’ badge for the sheer power it beholds. So there’s nothing better when you have get to unleash that kind of power in an SUV. Talk about being intimidating eh! Well, if you fancy something powerful, intimidating but little practical as well, BMW India has just launched the 2016 X5M and X6M in the country with prices starting from Rs. 1.55 crores (ex-showroom, India) and will be exclusively sold via the new M Studios.
Both the 2016 BMW X5M and X6M 5-seater SUVs join their standard derivatives in the Indian market and are differentiated by a host of performance additions. The front fascia is largely the same save for the aggressive new bumper with bigger air intakes, adaptive LED headlights and double bar kidney grille. The side profile gives out the least details of the model’s performance but gets the trademark gills and the M logo on the front fender. The SUVs ride on 20-inch alloy wheels as standard that can traded up for 21-inch alloys.
At the rear, the 2016 BMW X5M and X6M get quad exhausts that make for a feisty note and the new sporty bumper comes with an integrated diffuser. Moving inside, the dashboard from the standard models gets decked up with several ///M bits including a steering wheel cover, leather-covered instrument panel and roof liner, door pads while there are aluminium inlays all over the black cabin. The front gets sport seats while the rear gets a bench style seat offering lots of support and is upholstered in fine quality leather.
Loaded on tech, the X5M and X6M get a Harmon Kardon audio system with 16 speakers, dual zone auto climate control, Park Distance Control and the iDrive system with the new generation navigation system with 3D maps. The SUVs also get a new Heads Up Display (HUD) and an M specific instrument cluster. Safety tech is in abundance too with multiple airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with M Dynamic Mode, ABS with Brake Assist, side impact protection, Corner Braking Control and a whole lot more. There are multiple driving modes as well including Comfort, Sport and Sport+ while the Dynamic Damper Control settings helps offer keep better control at high speeds.
Coming to that intimidating performance that we told you about, the 2016 BMW X5M and X6M are powered by the same 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 engine that churns out 575 HP of power between 6000-6500 RPM and a 750 Nm of torque between 2200-5000 RPM. The V8 comes mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission that sends power to all four wheels with the xDrive AWD system. Despite the lugging weight, the performance SUVs are far from being lethargic with 0-100 kmph coming up in 4.2 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph.
The BMW X5M and X6M make a statement in performance but are also quite practical with a usable boot space and 5 seats on offer. For the customer, the X5M and X6M isn’t the only choice available and the Bavarian SUVs will have to battle it out with a host of offerings including the Germans Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes ML63 AMG while the Brit force Land Rover Range Rover SVR is now also on offer.
