BMW’s smallest SUV had promised its customers to be bigger, better and powerful than its predecessor. The compact luxury SUV segment was introduced to India by the BMW X1. Having had tremendous sales of this Urban Compact SUV in India, the 2016 BMW X1 has been launched at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo in the presence of the Cricket god, Sir Sachin Tendulkar. It faces stiff competition from the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes GLA, but BMW has tried (and almost managed) to push the X1 to the top of the list.
We will all miss the RWD platform, but let’s look forward to what BMW’s brand new Front Wheel Drive platform has to offer us, becoming the first BMW-badged SUV to do so. BMW has styled the X1 in accordance with their other SUV’s with a slightly longer wheelbase and more cabin space. It features a powerful 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, which produces a reasonable 188 BHP and a torque of 400 Nm, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Talking about the standard features of the 2016 BMW X1, the company provides 18-inch wheels, hill descent control, engine start-stop, M sport suspension, automatic wipers, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, eight-way power front seats with driver memory settings, and a heads-up display (Phew!). And BMW never falls short on gadgets. The Infotainment interface, Navigation, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a seven-speaker audio system with CD, AM/FM HD radio, and a USB port justifies that.
Also, did we mention this earlier? BMW loves giving its customers choices! The Premium Package option includes keyless entry and ignition, hands-free control for the power liftgate, adaptive LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, power folding mirrors, a four-way power lumbar for the front seats and interior ambient lighting. The Technology Package adds BMW Online and Apps connectivity, access to a Remote Services app, real-time traffic info for navigation, a touchpad on top of iDrive, and an upgraded 8.8-inch on-dash screen. The Driver Assistance Package gets you a rear-view camera and parking sensors all around the car, as well as BMW’s Parking Assistant automated parking, while the Cold Weather Package adds heated front seats. This is practically all that one requires in an Urban SUV!
At the price at which it is offered, it dazzled the audience at the Auto Expo. With sedan like dynamics and good fuel economy, it will surely win the hearts of its Indian customers.
