Will Smith drove it in I am legend; it has featured in few installments of the Fast and the Furious franchise, was Jason Statham’s choice in the Death Race, and it proudly made an appearance on more than 30 American classics. Ever imagined you being in a car that zooms past the streets flaunting pure American raw muscle? Ever wanted to ride that American wild horse? Well, now you just might! The chances of you living the American dream is closer than ever. Ford Mustang has arrived in India and was recently spotted at the ARAI test facility near Pune and possibly could see its launch in the country later this year.
The muscle car that made its debut in 1964 has been revamped for the 2016 model year and is now powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine for the base trim with 300 HP of power, while the mid variants get a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder EcoBoost motor producing 310 HP. The range-topping version continues with a 5.0-litre V8 heart 435 HP on offer and this is the motor we are interested in. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. India though is more likely to get the 6-speed automatic unit. For the enthusiast, the extroverted personality and burly sounds are bound to entice a driver to take it for a spin time and again and then some, especially since 0-100 kmph comes up in just 4.5 seconds on the V8 powered version.
For a car enthusiast, knowing the history of Mustang is as basic as laws of thermodynamics are to a mechanical engineer. The Ford muscle is a legend in the league of mortals. If you don’t know the Mustang, then you probably don’t know what the pedal in your car stands for. Few sources indicate that this iconic car received its name from a book ‘The Mustangs’ gifted to Robert J. Eggert by his wife. Others have a theory that this name originated from the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Whatever was the source of the name, this moniker has crossed all boundaries in defining performance on American streets.
The tenth generation Ford Mustang can race up to a top speed of 264 kmph, enough to get you to wear your seatbelts. With a classy design and the belligerent look at the front, there is little that needs to be said about the car’s ability to stand out. Ford has also done a great job of improving the cabin insulation, structural stiffness and body control over the previous generation model. The high tech aluminum engine with direct injection and cam phasing doesn’t make you wait long to wade into the open highways either.
The outrageous powertrain is further complimented by a comfortable cabin that comes equipped with a MyFord Touch system, plush leather seats and a turbo audio system. Not sure if you need the last one, especially with the V8 playing an orchestra at the front. If things go as we hope, the Mustang soon could be a familiar sight at the track and the Sunday drives, a sight we definitely do not want to miss. With a long lineage of Hollywood presence, the new proud owners of the Mustang could try their luck in Hollywood as well. Ok, so the last part was a joke!
