Whoever said in that scruffy old voice that performance and practicality do not go hand in hand has undoubtedly not seen a performance station wagon/estate in flesh. Performance estates as rare as they come, have been non-existent in India but not anymore. The car makers from Ingolstadt Audi has moved out of the convention and launched an extremely interesting 2015 RS6 Avant in the country priced at Rs. 1.35 crores (ex-showroom, Delhi and Mumbai). If you ever thought station wagons were dull and performance cars weren’t practical, prepare to re-learn everything as you read below.
With some mind-boggling power figures, the 2015 Audi RS6 Avant is powered by the turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that churns out 560 HP and 700 Nm of torque and is paired to the 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels with the Quattro system. With enough power to move houses, the RS6 Avant does the 0-100 kmph run 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 305 kmph with the highly recommended option pack.
Making your guilt a little free, Audi has added the cylinder on demand technology on the Avant that shuts off four cylinders to improve fuel economy while also reducing the CO2 emissions that currently stand at 229 g/km. Safety levels are paramount as the RS6 Avant comes loaded with 6 airbags, Adaptive Cruise Control, stability control, Active Lane Assist, Pre-sense Plus with Brake Assist and whole lot more.
With the spell-binding output, it is hard to believe that the Audi RS6 Avant can also move houses (could be literally, but we are yet to try). The performance estate gets a familiar styling with the wide and large single-frame grille, new sharper headlights which comes with the optional Matrix LED lights and the standard and very cool T-shaped LED daytime running lights, which enhance the captivating looks. The bumper is tweaked and gets massive air intakes giving away the beast lurking under the hood. Move to the side and the additional D-pillar sheds light on the estate body style of this performance sportscar while the rear looks sharp as ever, sporting new LED taillamps and dual chrome exhausts. Providing that needed finish to the RS6 Avant are the 20-inch alloys available as standard and can be upgraded to 21-inchers.
Move inside and the 2015 Audi RS6 is functional and sporty finished in all-black. You get sports seats with heat function, new TFT display unit, flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, rotor dial for the MMI, reversing camera, keyless go, navigation and a whole lot more on the very wide dashboard. The rear though is comfortable with ample of legroom and a bench style seat. If you still need space to accommodate a whole lot of stuff then no need to go out and purchase a Van again. The 565-litres of boot space (expandable to 1680-litres with the rear seats folded) will make sure you move things in style while doing it fast.
Audi has truly started a debate for performance enthusiasts and the practical lovers alike with the RS6 Avant. Not only does it offer performance but looks smokin’ hot with the agile design language. At Rs. 1.35 crores, the RS6 Avant witnesses competition from other German and British performance and luxury sedans/coupe that promise similar levels of fun. But practicality? Not so much. If you are one of those who choose to stand out of the crowd without the need to compromise, the RS6 Avant is hard to look past.
